FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

2) WHAT DO I NEED TO PROVIDE?
The league supplies basic equipment including shirts, balls and catcher’s gear; however, you may choose to purchase equipment on your own. We strongly suggest that each player has their own batting helmet. Included in the registration fee are: uniform shirt, ASA registration, insurance, umpire fees, basic equipment, and the standard picture package. You will need to provide:
- Softball Glove
- Cleats
- Batting Helmet w/chin strap
- Sliding Shorts (recommended for 10U+)
- Knee Guards (sliders – recommended for 10U+)
3) WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIRMENTS?
We welcome girls age 4 1/2 through 17 years of age. A girl's age as of January 1st detemines the Division into which she will be placed. Divisions/Teams are formed by age group. During the Spring season, we host the following divisions:
- Little Ladies: 4 1/2 - 6 years
- Rookies: 7 - 8 years
- Mini-Minors: 9 - 10 years
- Minors: 11 - 12 years
- Majors: 13 years +
During the Fall season (Winterball), Rookie through Major teams will be formed based on demand.
4) WHEN DO THE SEASONS START?
There are two seasons to consider in CGSO: Spring and Winterball (Fall). Spring season kicks off in February and lasts through May. Winterball (Fall) season kicks off in August and lasts into November.
5) ARE THERE TRYOUTS OR PLAYER ASSESSMENTS?
For the Spring season, the Mini-Minor, Minor and Major divisions will have player assessments on one designated Saturday in January (look for the announcement). There are no player assessments for Little Ladies or Rookie Divisions. Also, there are no player assessments for Winterball (Fall season); teams will be put together by the league and we try to make them as even as possible.
6) WHERE, WHEN & WHAT DAYS ARE PRACTICES?
Practices are generally weekdays, once or twice a week, at Carmichael Park and/or Billy Mitchell School. Your coaches will inform you the specific times and locations. Spring practices start in mid February, Fall/Winterball practices start in early August.
7) WHERE & WHEN DO WE PLAY GAMES?
For the Spring season, games are weekdays (and occasionally weekends) at Carmichael Park and/or Billy Mitchell School. The older divisions (12U and older) may interleague with other leagues in the Sacramento area. For Winterball (Fall season), CGSO plays other leagues in that have Fallball programs. All Winterball (Fall season) games are played on Sundays as doubleheaders. Your coaches will inform you the specific times and locations.
8) ARE THERE ANY KEY DATES I SHOULD BE AWARE OF?
Spring practices typically begin in February. Games typically begin in March and continue through May/June. The All-Star Season begins with practice in May/June and culminates with a tournament between all of the NorCal leagues approximately the first weekend in July.
Winterball is a Fall softball league which begins practice on August 1st and is followed by an opening season tournament on Labor Day weekend. Double-header games are played on Sundays only during the regular Fall Season (September through November).
9) CAN I REQUEST MY CHILD TO BE ON A SPECIFIC COACH'S OR FRIEND'S TEAM?
Yes, especially for the Little Laides and Rookie Divisions - we highly encourage that, but please note that we cannot guarantee spots based upon the shear number of requests that we get.
10) HOW MUCH DOES REGISTRATION COST?
CGSO is a non-profit organization; we do our best to keep the costs as low as possible. For Winterball 2010, registration will be $75.
11) WHAT IF I WANT A REFUND?
Our goal is to be flexible and fair. If there is a reasonable situation that arises, we will respond to it. We ask that you remain patient while the Board works through a specific situation. Once teams have been formed and uniforms ordered, and barring highly unusual or unforeseen circumstances, refunds will not be issued. Please remember that CGSO is a non-profit organization with Board members who volunteer their time to make the league run as smoothly as possible.
12) ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL TRAINING AND/OR CLINICS?
There will be a free Pre-Season Players Clinic hosted by the Del Campo High School Softball Team and Coaches. There will be also be a Pre-Season Coaches/Managers Clinic.
13) HOW CAN I HELP OUT?
There are many ways - each team needs volunteers and your support is key to ensuring a successful season for the team. Your fees do not pay any salaries – we are all volunteers. Here are positions you may consider:
- Manager: administrative and operational responsibility for your team.
- Head Coach or Assistant Coach: primary role is to teach the girls and assist the Manager.
- Team Parent: administrative support for the manager in facilitating team needs throughout the season.
- Scorekeeper: Maintain game records for the team.
- Sponsor: you or your company can help by recruiting or being a sponsor. There are various levels of sponsorships available. For more information, please contact us.
